1948 Leaf Satchel Paige #8 PSA EX 5. "Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching." Satchel Paige.

It's unbelievable. This is the prized rookie card of a 42-year-old man. A man who played in so many places for so many years and for so many teams that if the records existed, no one would believe them. The record says in 1948 Leroy "Satchel Paige" was a rookie. Don't believe that.

As a youth, Paige was sent to reform school, learned how to pitch there, and no one has been able to confine or reform him since. Paige's prime was in the Negro Leagues, the Caribbean, in Mexico. He estimated he's pitched in 2,500 games - vastly understated. Paige pitched for the Kansas City Monarchs, and many other Negro League teams. He would often pitch three innings every day for a week. He played baseball the year round. And because of segregation, he was kept from the Major Leagues for decades, joining the Majors for the coda of a brilliant symphony. When Paige finally reached the Majors in 1948, he went 6-1 with a 2.48 ERA. He pitched five seasons for Cleveland and the St. Louis Browns. Joe DiMaggio said this about Paige when the Yankee batted against a younger Satchel in exhibition games. "He was the best I ever faced."

Graded PSA EX 5. This 1948 Leaf set had 98 cards, and the Satchel Paige one was short-printed, so it is extremely scarce. No one is sure if the set came out in late 1948 or in early 1949. The cards feature the 1948 season stats. The cards were the first to be printed in color since World War II. Great eye appeal. The rare rookie card of an American legend, a man who refused to be confined by segregation or age.
