Description

1939 Play Ball Ted Williams #92 PSA NM-MT 8. A master stroke in the fine art of understatement is found in the back-text of this marvelous Ted Williams rookie card, wherein the writers for Gum, Inc. cited the opinion of "experts" in noting that the youthful Boston prospect "has a great future." Although, granted, Williams hadn't yet enjoyed the opportunity to impress baseball fans on the game's grandest stage, it was apparent that the young player was poised to make history, and that he would become a credible rival for the sport's prevailing gold standard, Joe DiMaggio.

Williams' emergence is more than fittingly acknowledged by this discreetly designed collectible, which clearly hails from an era that responded favorably to the concept of "less is more." The Sox legend is shown in an intimidating batting stride and, while the crisply detailed photographic likeness allows the viewer to experience the game - through the sight of dirt on Williams' uniform, for example, as well as the intensity in his expression - one is allowed to appreciate the cardfront without distraction from company logos, caption blocks, or color splashes. It was felt, rightly, that the player's essence was all that needed to be displayed.

Among a total census of nearly 600 PSA-graded copies, just a dozen have achieved higher distinction than the exceptional specimen presented here. An unforgiving search for condition liabilities yields only the faintest whisper of a touch at the top-left corner. This collectible's image of the "Splinter" - properly positioned inside pure white, untoned borders - exhibits full integrity in its print quality, and the jet-black inking of the reverse (with the subject's name in mixed upper- and lower-case letters) is flawlessly rendered.
