1939 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio #26 SGC Mint 9 - None Higher! When singer-songwriter Paul Simon met Mickey Mantle, the Yankee star asked Simon why the lyrics to the "Mrs. Robinson" song that said, "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns its lonely heart to you," didn't use his name instead of Joe DiMaggio's. Simon responded, "It's about syllables, Mick...." But it seems apparent that Joe DiMaggio's name was selected for more than just syllables; it concurs up nostalgia. Like other New York Yankee heroes - such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, and Mantle - DiMaggio saw his public fame supersede his baseball fame. The fascination included his family of San Francisco fishermen, his still-record 56-game hitting streak achieved in '41 when the whole country would daily ask, "How did DiMaggio do today?", and his marriage to Marilyn Monroe. In 1939, Joltin' Joe would have a tremendous MVP season as he led the AL in batting at .382 and hit 30 homers. Lifetime, he would help the Yankees to nine World Series titles, win three MVPs, two batting titles and hit 361 home runs. Old-timers told of watching DiMaggio play many games and never seeing him throwing to the wrong base, or misjudging a fly ball. The Yankee numbers said it all: Ruth (#3), Gehrig (#4) and now DiMaggio (#5).

The 1939 Play Ball cards are 2-1/2" by 3-1/8", a larger size that most of any other company's earlier sets. The simple design front has a B&W photo, the sharpest to date on any national set, with a white border and no text. Backs have name, number, vitals and a large bio. Supposedly, the set contained 162 cards, but #126 was never issued. Plagued by stray marks and centering issues, the set is rare in high grades. Graded SGC Mint 9. One of only a handful of cards graded MINT by SGC with none higher.
