    Description

1938 Goudey Ernie Lombardi #270 PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 - Pop Two, None Higher. Ernie Lombardi had such power at the plate a New York Times sportswriter likened them to "a shell leaving a howitzer." Not the fastest runner in Major League history, Lombardi is considered one of the four "Mount Rushmore" of pre-war catchers along with Mickey Cochrane, Bill Dickey and Gabby Hartnett. Many blame a grudge held against him by former Reds general manager and National League president Warren Giles for his long delay in joining the trio in the Hall of Fame. There is no reason to doubt the unquestionable quality of a card. Tied with just one other for "Highest Graded Example" status. Centering is a hairline away from perfection and there are barely any hints of human handling. Graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5, this card is one of only two PSA examples graded so surprisingly high with none others rating higher.
