    Description

1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 PSA NM 7. Here's a chance to get a rare Lou Gehrig rookie card from the memorable 1933 Goudey set. The 1933 Goudey issue broke new ground as the first major issue of gum baseball cards. This was occurring during the depths of the Great Depression when banks were foreclosing on homes and farms, and then the banks themselves were going bankrupt. Unlike the earlier cigarette cards that were directed at adults, the gum cards were primarily intended for young boys - youths who might not have the cash for many packs of cards during such dire economic times. But things worked out well for Goudey, and the bubble gum era for card collecting was under way.

The Iron Horse is featured at the peak of his powers. He was thirty-years-old, and a year away from his tremendous 1934 season when he won the Triple Crown with 49 homers, 166 RBI and a batting average of .363. Of course, Hall of Famer Gehrig would eventually achieve a consecutive game record of 2,130 games (which stood for 56 years) before the ravages of ALS caused him to retire. Gehrig hit fourth for most his years with the Yankees and won two MVPs, a batting title, and was on seven All-Star teams. In his 17-year Major League career, his Yankees won six World Series. Graded PSA NM 7.
