    Description

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #181 SGC NM-MT 8. Magnificent representation of this key card from one of the hobby's most beloved issues transports us back to the days of the Depression without the unpleasantness of failed banks and bread lines. This has always been our favorite of the three Ruth poses within this first great issue of the bubble gum era, an honest portrait with all the wrinkles and rotundity that the others gloss over.

Certainly it goes without saying that Babe Ruth is the top star of this first great bubble gum issue, and we've always been particularly fond of this variation from his four '33 Goudey appearances. It's the most detailed portrait, telling the tale of legend closer to the end than the beginning.

But if the subject is showing his age here, the card itself most assuredly is not. You'll search long and hard to find a pre-war card with sharper corners or cleaner surfaces. In 437 submissions of this Ruth model, SGC has granted only three others the compliment of a NM-MT 8 assessment, with only a single specimen rising higher.
