1923 -1924 Billiken Cigars Andy Cooper PSA Good 2. When Andy Cooper was born in 1898, Waco, Texas was a small town of 20,000 people. Nick named "Lefty" for his durability on the mound often pitching in three games of a five-game series. Cooper was recognized as the best Negro League pitcher in 1923. In 1928 he started off his season with back-to-back wins against the Cleveland Tigers including a 2-hit shutout. His career spanned two decades playing for the Detroit Stars and the Kansas City Monarchs. He also pitched in Cuba during the winter and it is from there that we have the precious few cards on which he makes an appearance. Offered is an extremely rare "Billiken" Oval Cigars card from 1923 when Cooper was pitching for Havana. Graded PSA Good 2. The card shows some completely acceptable corner wear, an off-centered portrait that has faded over the last century but no creasing which is a rare treat for these fragile cards. The grade is a reflection of the centering which is close to being 100/0 as otherwise it is a solid VG-EX copy. This is one of the very few cards of Cooper who was finally inducted into the Baseball HoF in 2006.
