    Description

1922 E121 American Caramel Babe Ruth (Holding Ball) PSA Mint 9 - Pop One, None Higher! The term "trifecta" is associated with the world of horse racing. If one were to bet on which three horses, in one race, will win, then come in second and third place you have "hit the trifecta!" In the last year, Heritage has been offering what has to be considered one of the most exciting trifecta's in the hobby. In our November 2018 auction, Heritage offered an E121 American Caramel "Holding Bird" Babe Ruth card in PSA Mint 9. In our August 2019 auction, Heritage offered an E121 American Caramel "Photo Montage" Babe Ruth card graded PSA Mint 9. Presented is the third E121 pose of Babe Ruth in that series, his "Holding Ball" pose and yes, this card too is graded Mint!

The year 1922 was actually a tumultuous one for the superstar slugger, whose poor behavior had kept the Babe in the scandal rags, and out of the line-up. After missing six weeks at the beginning of the season due to Judge Landis' suspension for barnstorming infractions, Ruth went just five days before being stripped of his captain's stripes for throwing dirt at an umpire and then directing a vulgar gesture at a heckler in the stands. In the midst of this turmoil surrounding the game's headline attraction, a new baseball palace slowly began to rise from a former lumberyard just across the Harlem River from the Polo Grounds where the Yankees shared an uneasy cohabitation with the New York Giants. It was a period of great upheaval for a team on the brink of an unprecedented era of glory.

Graded PSA Mint 9! We find two photographic portraits of baseball's bad boy on this remarkable rarity, the single representation of this Ruth varietal to achieve a Mint 9 assessment. In fact, of all six Ruth entries in the E121 American Caramel issue, only four representations have climbed this high. A condition report leaves us with little to do but spout superlatives, as the corners are sharp, the registration clear, the surfaces clean. Unquestionably one of the finest early Ruth cards in the hobby.
