1921 Lou Gehrig High School Class Photograph. Exceptional vintage photograph was issued to a classmate of the Iron Horse, who is pictured in an individual portrait vignette in the fifth row, fourth column, with the caption "H. Gehrig." Though predating his ascension to pinstripes by two years, young Henry Louis had already achieved some degree of baseball fame as of the time of this photo. Chosen as the New York City representative to face a Chicago high school at Wrigley for a National Championship game, the High School of Commerce brought Gehrig to the plate with a small lead at the top of the eighth, and the bases loaded. Lou sent the second pitch high into the winds of Chicago and out of the grand ballpark completely to record a grand slam homer. Upon the team's victorious return to the City, five thousand people turned out at Grand Central Station to greet them, and the New York newspapers declared the Gehrig boy as "the Babe Ruth of the schoolyards." It was largely due to this fifteen minutes of fame that Gehrig was able to wrangle a scholarship at Columbia University, which ultimately led to an appearance before Yankee scouts. And the rest, as they say, is history. Certainly one of the earliest photographic images of Gehrig made available at auction, this 10x13" piece shows scattered creasing and chipping, with a lengthy strip of vintage tape slanting across the upper half, but none of these factors intrudes upon the area of Lou's image. Professionally matted and framed to overall dimensions of 15x20".
