Description

    The only complete album known!

1921 Koester Bakery "Stars of Baseball" New York Giants/Yankees Complete Set (52) in the Original Album! Though it was not the first time that the World Series was confined to a single city-Chicago earned that distinction in just the third edition, in 1906-the 1921 Fall Classic was noteworthy as the first to feature the perennially October-active New York Yankees, who met their Polo Grounds landlords the New York Giants in the first of fourteen Big Apple "Subway Series." In many ways, the contest proved to be a battle between the Dead Ball Era that the National League Champions represented, and the nascent power game that emanated from the bat of the Yankees' star slugger Babe Ruth. Tradition would trump innovation in this battle, but the Live Ball Era would ultimately win the war, an age of unprecedented dominance for the pinstripers just around the corner.

Of the multitude of souvenirs and collectible issued for the Series none, or very few, are as rare as are the fifty-two cards issued by Koester Bakery. The set showcases everyone from players to coaches from both New York teams--some hold status as being unique to this issue. Rarely are the cards found in any quantity, with even singles arising with the most limited regularity. This is the first time the promotion has been offered as a complete set!

All of the stars are here: Jesse Burkett (unique), Casey Stengel (a unique portrait), Frank Frisch, Home Run Baker, Waite Hoyt, Dave Bancroft and, of course, The Babe. As rare as the cards are, the specially-designed album is practically unheard of. The front reads, "Stars of Baseball, Pennant Winners 1921, American and National League."

The 10.75x8" paper album approaches excellent condition, with creasing to the front cover and some corner wear to internal pages. The cards must have been gently glued in soon after issue, or perhaps were even issued within the album, as they are that well-preserved. Each is mounted with a small spot of adhesive, but are otherwise in Near Mint to Mint condition. As tempted as we were, we have decided to provide the new owner with the decision to remove the cards if desired, though there is unquestionable appeal in leaving the collection to present in the manner in which it was originally intended.
