    A Ruthian rarity!

1917-20 M101-6 Felix Mendelsohn Babe Ruth SGC 40 VG 3. For the Babe Ruth collector this card is almost as significant as is his rookie card debut. A pivotal moment in baseball history occurred the day after Christmas in 1919 when the Red Sox sold pitcher (and slugger) Babe Ruth to the Yankees for $100,000 and a loan secured by Fenway Park. It was the birth of "The Curse." Felix Mendelsohn was a publisher based in Chicago. Readers of The Sporting News found his ads offering these baseball cards over a span of four years from 1917 through 1920. This rare series has two different Ruth cards, one naming him just "Ruth" with the Boston Red Sox and this card, now "Babe" Ruth, C.F. Yankees." It is very possible this New York variation was one of the last cards offered for this promotion.

Following tradition with the extended number of years The Sporting Life made available their W600 premiums, the lengthy promotion time for what we call the M101-16 edition did not result in the cards being readily available almost a century later. Overall the series is very scarce and in great demand. The large cards are approx. 4.5x6.5" with blank backs. The current roster is well over one hundred subjects, but still considered incomplete.

Graded SGC 40 VG 3. The SGC census shows just nine submissions. This is the lone example in VG condition, with just one rated higher. There is one crease in the lower right. Corners show only modest wear. One of the most significant Ruth appearance from his early career and a card far more scarce than his rookie. A rare and exciting opportunity for the advanced Ruth collector.
