1916 M101-4 Blank Back (Sporting News) George Sisler #166 PSA Mint 9 - Pop. Two, None Finer! Fifty-one stolen bases and an unearthly .420 batting average made Sisler a landslide winner of the 1922 American League MVP Award, and his durability and consistency made him a Hall of Famer. His 257 base hits in 1920 seemed like a record that would survive as long as Cy Young's victories and Nolan Ryan's strikeouts, but then along came a Japanese superstar named Ichiro to knock him from his perch (with an extra seventy-three at-bats, to be fair).

This remarkable rookie card reminds us of a fact that most of us had forgotten. Like Babe Ruth, another future Hall of Famer playing his first full Major League season in 1915, Sisler got his start on the mound, and is listed here as a pitcher--he'd go four-and-four with a 2.83 ERA in seventy innings of action that year.

A spectacularly rare card in any condition (only eleven have been submitted to PSA), this is one of two assessed at the Mint 9 level, with none superior. The best rookie card of an inaugural class Hall of Famer? That's a special card.
