1915 W-Unc Jim Thorpe SGC 20 Fair 1.5 - The Only Example Known!
Born on May 28, 1888 to the daughter of the last great Sauk and Fox chief Black Hawk, James Francis Thorpe was given the Indian name Wa-Tho-Huk, which translates to "Bright Path." It was a name that few would ever hear. The American political philosophy of Manifest Destiny had already decimated the population of Native Americans. This enforced segregation led Thorpe to the Carlisle Industrial Indian School in rural Pennsylvania in 1904. It was there that his phenomenal athletic career began as a member of the school's track and football teams.

The legend of Jim Thorpe began to grow from noted collegiate athlete to international superstar. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games, a twenty-four year old Thorpe dominated the pentathlon and decathlon, earning Gold in each. King Gustav of Sweden said to him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world. I would consider it an honor to shake your hand." Thorpe's reply: "Thanks, King."

Graded SGC 20 Fair 1.5, this is the only example on record, presented for only the third time upon the hobby's auction block. It is his most famous baseball pose, one totally unique to any card promotion. (A beautiful complete near mint "Police Gazette Magazine" including his M128 supplement is being offered elsewhere in this auction). This may very well be your only chance to acquire at public auction this significant antiquity, and one of the few baseball cards to feature this true American legend.

The first time this card, and two of the other three seen in this auction, were described: "The following 25 cards, offered in 17 lots, comprise an extremely rare group of cards that were discovered many years ago by Tony Spota Sr. and passed on to his son who said, 'The 15 known cards listed in the Standard Catalog under the "W-Unc" section and most, if not all, came from the Don Steinbach collection and were purchased by me... about 10 years ago. ...To the best of my knowledge no others have surfaced.'"
