1915 E137 Zeenut "Black Sox" Fred McMullen, With Coupon SGC 20 Fair 1.5 - His Only Card Appearance! One of baseball's darkest moments was the gambling scandal surrounding one of the best assembled teams in history. Although wallowing deep in the shame of smearing the reputation of our national pastime, the status of the eight "Black Sox" among baseball's collectors only grew over the last nine decades elevating the desirability of cards bearing their images to level shared by baseball's elite. It is almost by fate that the scandal occurred soon after WW I, an era of limited insert card promotions. This severe lack of appearance by these fallen athletes is a short list only adding to their allure. McMullen was a third baseman who played for just five seasons retiring with a .256 batting average and just one home run and 70 RBIs. His "contribution" during the 1919 series was a meager pair of at bats, but he did manage one hit. Despite a commanding role in any one game, he was banned for his role in the insidious plan. McMullen appears on just two cards. One is a unique Sox team issue from 1917, the other is this very rare 1915 Zeenut card when he played for the Los Angeles Angels in the Pacific Coast League. This is his only officially circulated card appearance.

Graded SGC 20 Fair 1.5. This is one of three examples in fair condition, there are four graded higher. Seven is total population according to the SGC census. The thin-card stock is affected by multiple creases but this has failed to greatly impact the visual appeal. Every E137 Zeenut came with a coupon needed to redeem any one of a number of "Valuable Premiums." For this reason they are almost always missing. According to a premier PCL specialist, only 3 to 4% of surviving Zeenuts survive with this coupon portion. We are very pleased to report this copy is among that small percentage.
