1915 Cracker Jack Walter Johnson #57 SGC 88 NM/MT 8. Next to names Cobb, Wagner and Jackson is the Washington Senators' mound master Walter Johnson. Johnson was a tall and unassuming sight on the mound... until he threw his fastball which at the time was thought to be over 90 mph. It seems all that batters could hope for is hearing the ball smack against the catcher's mitt as it zipped past them because seeing the ball wasn't an easy task for even the keenest eyes of the best hitters of the era. It was said that, "...(Johnson was) the most threatening sight I ever saw in the ball field." And this quote comes from from the steely Ty Cobb in 1907 when Walter was a rookie just fresh in from Idaho. His 3,500+ strikeouts and 417 wins proved the irascible Cobb's words rather prophetic. The offered example has every qualification of being a crowning touch atop any advanced vintage collection. The borders are bright and clean, corners are sharp, centering is precise, surfaces are free or stains and any scuffing and the colors are vibrant and fresh. A stunning display made the more impressive surrounded by the deep black insert of the SGC holder. A key card entry and among the top 100 cards of the hobby. Only three examples have been recorded higher.
