    Description

1915 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson #88 SGC 92 NM/MT+ 8.5. Although baseball's first commissioner had been recruited by Major League Baseball to ferret out its worst in the midst of the 1919 Black Sox scandal, Judge Landis was able to recognize the game's best as well, properly honoring this shimmering diamond in the Dead Ball Era rough. "He was an inspiration to everybody and may we have more of his kind," spoke a doleful Kenesaw Mountain Landis at the 1925 memorial service for the future posthumous Hall of Fame inductee. "His sense of justice, his integrity, and sportsmanship made him far greater than Christy Mathewson the pitcher." It was a sentiment shared by essentially every player, teammate or adversary, which ever encountered Big Six on the playing field.

Graded SGC 92 NMN/MT+ 8.5. One of four in NM/MT+with two rated higher. Matty was engaged in his penultimate Major League campaign, and his last of sixteen as a New York Giant, when this nearly pristine representation emerged from a box of Cracker Jacks. It appears effectively unchanged, remarkable considering it has celebrated its centennial, retaining the bold coloration that is the set's hallmark, and escaping all the expected condition problems of thin paper from Dead Ball Era. Corners remain sharp, and not a wrinkle or stain impedes upon its surface. It's a fitting tribute to the man, who was himself a diamond in the rough of the early twentieth century game.
