    Description

1914 E145-1 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson #88 PSA VG-EX 4. On Independence Day of this year, the great Christy Mathewson shut out the Phillies in the second game of a Polo Grounds doubleheader to notch his 350th career victory. With Babe Ruth nothing more than a promising prospect at the close of 1914, and Ty Cobb a now brilliant but unlovable superstar, it was Mr. Mathewson who held the collective hearts of baseball fans nationwide at the time he appeared on this Cracker Jack card. Mathewson would appear in the 1915 Cracker Jack series but this attractive horizontal pitching pose would be replaced by a formal portrait of Factoryville, PAs native son. As a one year only issue, today this card is among the most difficult Cracker Jack cards to acquire from either of the E145 editions. It is revered for its subject and rarity. It is admired for the creative interplay between a pitching Mathewson and the "Cracker Jack" and "Ball Players" copy, all set off by a rich red background.

Graded PSA VG-EX 4. A review of the PSA census report show this card is one of three at the VG-EX level with another trio grading higher. Issued in boxes of baseball's adopted snack, thankfully the card has survived with only very light staining; the off-centered graphics are bright, clear, and precisely registered, almost wholly unaffected by the close to century old product imprinted into the paper. The fragile, textured media is free of any creasing or wrinkling. Compared to the harsh, often black-and-white, technical assessments, the visual appeal of this rare E145-1 entry is above and beyond the unforgiving requirements of third party grade levels. A prize for Cracker Jack collector and Mathewson enthusiasts alike.
