1914 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson #103 SGC 60 EX 5. It was 1914, the year that this gorgeous card rolled off the assembly line and into a box of Cracker Jack, that saw one the game's greatest hitters ever, have an "off" season batting .338 and 153 hits for his last full season with Cleveland before a fateful move to Charles Comiskey's Chicago squad. Very few players truly transcend the game. Immortalized here is the legend of Joe Jackson. Here he wields his trusty Black Betsy gripped tightly in his calloused farm boy hands, emblazoned against the scarlet background of this beautiful issue. We don't know what the folks at Cracker Jack had envisioned when they produced these astonishing specimens, then exposing them to a very tasty but very sticky caramel treat. A century later, this form of circulation has resulted in acquiring cards grading Excellent/Mint or better a monumental task. With no mail-in promotion available, it is almost totally void of the sticky candy extract in defiance of the original circulation method and shows few signs of circulation and handling. The scarcity of the 1914 series could be the result of the '15 edition, essentially a reissue plus an "extended series" prompting youngsters to forgo the product stained card for a fresh copy with clean and perfect surfaces.

Graded SGC 60 EX 5, this card is one of two to earn the "EX" rating from SGC with a half dozen graded higher from only 18 reviewed by the SGC staff. His trusted bat guides the eye to the "Cracker Jack Ball Players" advertising. The front is nothing short of visually impressive for this issue as one sees extremely faint toning, nothing seems to have affected the bold portrait where the only aspect that doesn't resonate quality is what seems to be the only reason for the rating - centering. The reverse offers the same clarity and "as issued" appeal as does the obverse. This is a strong example of one of the toughest singles in the hobby to find in high grade.
