1914 Cracker Jack Frank Chance #99 PSA NM-MT 8. On Independence Day of this year, the great Christy Mathewson shut out the Phillies in the second game of a Polo Grounds doubleheader to notch his 350th career victory. Babe Ruth nothing more than a promising prospect and Ty Cobb was a now brilliant but unlovable superstar. Though the days of "Tinker to Evers to Chance" had passed by the time the future Hall of Fame first baseman appeared on this highly coveted Dead Ball era treasure, the card's does date to his earliest years with the New York Yankees (the nickname was officially adopted in 1913) and originates from the first of two massive card promotions sponsored by Cracker Jack. Their 1915 effort was for all intents and purposes a reissue but with Chance's departure from the Majors midway through the New York Yankees' 1914 season signaled a stop to the production of this card with teammate Hal Chase debuting on card #99 in 1915. As a one year only issue, today this card is among the most difficult Cracker Jack cards to acquire. Not just your ordinary card, this one boasts sharp (yes, sharp) corners and clean surfaces. The off-center portrait seems to fully account for the grade. Is it somehow possible this card defied the traditional circulation method? Nothing short of a wondrous addition to your Cracker Jack or vintage HoFers collection. Graded PSA NM-MT 8, from a paltry total pop of only twenty-five, this card is the highest graded example on the PSA census report!
