Description

1914 Boston Garter Joe Jackson SGC 10 Poor 1. There are stars, superstars, Hall of Famers, and then there are legends. The saga of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is beyond legend, his saga attaining mythical proportions reserved only for deities. Is he revered because we want to believe that "Goliath" is always the bad guy? Is he admired because his humble beginnings afford him a greater degree of compassion and understanding not afforded to the privileged? Or could it be because the love of the game is so engrained in our psyche that it would be sacrilegious to admonish the man who was one of the most gifted natural talents ever to step foot into a batter's box?

Regardless, Joe Jackson is the undisputed key entry in the extremely rare 12-card Boston Garter window display series appearing in 1914. The intense batting pose of Jackson, here towering god-like above the all-but forgotten earthly product this marvelous piece was designed to promote.

The corners show a gentle rounding, the surfaces display a light toning barely affecting hues that remain rich and appealing. Free of any type of restoration or alteration, this crowning achievement of any vintage collection does show the result of a liaison with one of nature's little creatures who decided to make a small portion of card stock a hearty afternoon or evening snack. This small opening to the right of Jackson's knee is the most obvious evidence of this dining choice. A slight water mark in the upper right and two small spots of surface chipping along an edge are mentioned for accuracy. The technical grade is the natural result of the mentioned segment and fails to take into consideration the strong visual appeal bestowed upon the viewer. This is one of only two examples known with a numerical grade and without nibbling, this amazing treasure would grade at the Very Good (3) to Very Good-Excellent plateau. Few would dispute that these full-color Boston Garter cards are the rarest and most attractive of any baseball series of the 20th Century. If afforded the opportunity to acquire any one of the dozen names on the impressive roster, Joe Jackson would receive the nod every time.
