Description

1912 T207 Red Cross Tobacco Buck Weaver SGC 20 Fair 1.5. "There is no such thing as bad publicity." It's a common saying most typically assigned to P.T. Barnum, a suggestion that fame and infamy are hardly opposites. Nowhere in the collecting hobby is this more apparent than in those relics related to the conspirators of the 1919 World Series scandal, those condemned "Eight Men Out" whose banishment from the sport assured each a brand of athletic immortality that only Shoeless Joe might have enjoyed otherwise.

Certainly George "Buck" Weaver, a lifetime .272 hitter, would have survived as just another "common" in the trading card hobby had it not been for that ill-advised treachery, but here he claims a starring role in the T207 issue so universally recognized and coveted that it is known, simply, as "The Red Cross Weaver." Even after a small find featuring that rarest of advertising backs emerged a few years ago, the population of Red Cross variations encapsulated by SGC grew to only ten. This is the only confirmed Weaver representation thereof.

Even in the absence of this singular rarity, the boldness of the red ink on verso sets the representation apart from the tiny known population, and the card presents far better than the technical grade that suffers from a small area of glue staining on verso and light, rather inconsequential creasing. Many would consider this the most significant T207 that exists, and they'd have a strong argument.
