A fresh to the hobby example

1912 E270 Colgan's Chips "Tin Tops" Joe Jackson SGC 20 Fair 1.5. During the second game of a 1908 Carolina Association doubleheader pitting the Greenville Spinners against the Anderson Electricians, twenty-year old outfielder Joe Jackson surrendered to the pain, putting aside the pair of brand-new spikes that had raised dark blisters on his feet. In the seventh inning, he laced a long line drive, sliding into third with a triple. As the dust cloud settled, an opposing fan shouted to him, "You shoeless son-of-a-gun!" It was a nickname that, along with the dark shadow of the 1919 Black Sox scandal, would trail him through eternity.

From those humble beginnings of rural Southern poverty, Jackson would develop into one of the most feared and respected hitters in the American League, a man who counted Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth among his greatest supporters. As steep and stunning was his rise, his fall was even greater, though today his infamy only heightens his legend and the demand for the rare few mementos of his professional career.

Here we present one of the most coveted promotions from this true Shakespearean tale, a relic small in stature but enormous in collecting intrigue. It stands as one of just four representations in the joint census of PSA and SGC's population reports. With so few known, this E270 Colgan's Chips "Tin Tops" candy tin insert has remained a dream for all but the most enterprising of collectors concentrating on the tragic life of Shoeless Joe. To the best of our research, this is only the third opportunity to acquire this piece via the hobby's auction block, and the first time Heritage has ever had the privilege to participate.

Graded SGC 20 FR 1.5. There are just three confirmed examples graded by this service, with PSA adding just one to the known population. The grade is a reflection of the overall surface scuffing and soiling, as well as a spots of surface chipping. Limited original distribution and the offer to exchange 25 "tops" for a photograph of the "World's Pennant Winning Team" contribute to the lofty challenge E270s specialists encounter in acquiring examples today. Although subtle and unassuming in appearance, few if any other card collectibles in this hobby equal the rarity and mythical status of this Jackson memento.
