One of just two representations known!

1911 T5 Pinkerton Cabinets Ty Cobb (Batting) #169 SGC Authentic. The Pinkerton name applies to a precious few promotions, including the format presented here, a cabinet card available only through a coupons exchange program. Period advertising reported a roster of 376 possible names to acquire, but this figure stands in sharp contrast to the census recorded in modern times. While we can never know if the full contingent of 376 was ever produced, there's no question but that the vast majority that once existed has fallen to the slings and arrows of time's passage. Each cabinet the coupling of a fragile glossy photo adhered to a paper or thick 4-3/4" x 7-3/4" card stock base. This is by far the most coveted Pinkerton variety, and it should go without saying that the great Ty Cobb serves as the key entry in the set.

This is currently the one and only example on record with SGC, with the PSA population report showing just one "Authentic" entry. The full-figure portrait of Cobb displays fine detail and bold contrast, lacking any of the fading often seen in imagery of the period. Close inspection of the image area reveals a series of dimple impressions only particularly evident at certain angles to the light. A few small stains adorn the cardboard mount, but again cause little visual distraction. This is an entry that would grade well, but the apparent addition of adhesive to the bottom reverse of the image-Pinkerton cabinets were issued with only the top affixed to the mount so that the bottom could flap-requires an "Authentic" assessment.

Knowledgeable collectors are aware of just how scarce these Pinkerton cabinets are, issued only to those intrepid souls who mailed in coupons packaged with Pinkerton Tobacco cigarettes. While this mode of distribution served as a powerful restriction upon the original population, the passing years have claimed the vast majority of that original supply as the oversized dimensions of the cabinets proved counterproductive to their survival. A premier Cobb collectible and one where it seems no more than a handful may exist.
