    Description

1911 T5 Pinkerton Cabinets Honus Wagner #853 SGC 50 VG/EX 4. Graded 50 VG/EX 4 by SGC, this the only numerically graded example to date. This magnificent piece is destined to be the grand prize for even the most advanced vintage hobbyist or Pinkerton specialist. Pinkerton cabinets are among the most attractive, most highly sought after and difficult to find of the 20th Century "T" class issues. When found, most examples have been remounted to non-original paper or cardboard. This glorious example is all original thus the numerical anointing by the conservative and critical eyes of SGC. The full sized (3-1/2" x 5-3/4") photo shows slight wrinkling at the top area where the fragile paper is mounted to the sturdy 4-3/4" x 7-3/4" mount. One surface "nik" in the photo and two surface chips (one at top and one at bottom) of the mount only affecting the reverse are the only other condition factors of note. For pure aesthetics, this item could be described as being at the excellent to mint level. One can only speculate if Honus was aware his image, in this instance, a "fielding" pose (his other entry in this series is a batting depiction) was used for a tobacco related promotion. The one saving grace could have been that instead of just buying a single pack of cigarettes, Pinkerton cabinets had to be redeemed for a quantity of coupons found in Pinkerton products. It was this exchange program which also explains the undeniable rarity of this series in today's marketplace. Although Wagner's T206 is and will always be the "crowning edition" of the Wagner library, this stunning treasure is in fact many, many times more scarce and another example of this quality may not exist.
