    Description

1911 T4 Obak Cabinet "Black Sox" Buck Weaver SGC 10 Poor 1 - A Newly Discovered Uncatalogued Pose! One of the features of this auction is a collection that has been passed down within one family for over a century. The collection focuses on cards from the 1909-1912 era with a strong concentration on the rare cards of the PCL issues. There are numerous lots of rarely offered Zeenut, Obak and Pacific Coast Biscuit cards including partial, near or complete sets and single cards that become available only on rare occasions. Here we offer an astonishing find that to our knowledge is totally one-of-a-kind!

George "Buck" Weaver was a member of the San Francisco Seals of the PCL for just one season. His tenure is commemorated along with 174 others (based on an Obak checklist) but far fewer have actually been confirmed as part of these West Coast-issued rarities. His entry has traditionally been a waist-high batting pose. This newly discovered treasure is a second pose of Weaver in a more casual "Arms at Sides" portrait that is not only his second depiction as well as the first recorded second depiction of any player in the extremely rare T4 promotion. Weaver's cocky, self-assured expression is unmistakable. Buck's on-field success in later years has been unfairly overshadowed by his exact role in the "Black Sox" controversy but he enjoys a wide-scale exoneration as his legend remains deservedly strong among passionate baseball hobbyists. While his known T4 is a huge addition to any collection this newly discovered real photo premium earns one immediate "Elite" status and is a likely a museum quality level acquisition.

Graded SGC 10 Poor 1, this card is a totally unique piece picturing Buck Weaver with this "Arms At Sides" portrayal. Encapsulation nicely protects the fragile relic and makes for impressive display. Its image is clear and is clearly the infamous Black Sox. There is obvious staining and soiling and the name "Waver" as been added. The back displays an "86" which many feel were added by Obak processing and it matches the number Weaver holds on the Obak checklist. This is nothing short of a very special relic, one that in view of its PCL origin, its subject's role in our National Pastime and origin from one of the most rare of all 20th century promotions can not be denied.
