    Description

1911 T205 Sweet Caporal Walter Johnson SGC 92 NM-MT+ 8.5 - The Ultimate Graded Example! Although no radar existed during Johnson's pitching days, it is likely that his fastball clocked somewhere in the neighborhood of one hundred miles an hour. This would very simply be a terrifying sight for Dead Ball Era batsmen had the ball originate from the hand of any other pitcher than Walter Johnson. He is as known for his power and control on the mound as he is for his gentle nature and unwavering sense of good sportsmanship. While most batters failed to dig in at the plate out of fear, the always savvy Ty Cobb reported that he would crowd the plate even more when facing Johnson, knowing his fear of injuring an opposing player. The 23-year old Kansas fireballer had yet to notch a quarter of his 417 career wins at the time this gorgeous T205 "Sweet Caporal" card debuted in 1911.

In every way this is an exceptionally high-grade specimen from one of tobacco's most picturesque sets. One must look very closely to spot a slight deviation from perfection. The colors, surfaces and corners are of the utmost quality. The image area is where we see the lone fall from grace - the deep red ink pass is slightly off register that has barely affected Johnson's vibrant portrait. PSA and SGC have encapsulated tens of thousands of T205 cards. This is one of the finest T205 cards Heritage has ever offered its bidders. With one of baseball's greatest pitchers being featured it becomes one of the most important cards from the famed tobacco issue. The quality on this cardboard treasure is nothing less than one-of-a-kind and may never be improved upon. Graded SGC 92 NM-MT+ 8.5 should be impressive enough. Considering SGC is the more conservative of the two major services, that makes this card all the more appealing. A stellar exemplar that presents an amazing gold border and four corners showing only the lightest amounts of touches at the very outer tips. Combining the PSA and SGC census reports, this is the only card to grade NM-MT+ 8.5. This is currently the ultimate T205 Walter Johnson card known!

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
