Description

1911 M110 Sporting Life Christy Mathewson SGC 60 EX 5 - Pop Two With None Higher. "He was an inspiration to everybody and may we have more of his kind," spoke a doleful Kenesaw Mountain Landis at the 1925 memorial service for the future posthumous Hall of Fame inductee. "His sense of justice, his integrity, and sportsmanship made him far greater than Christy Mathewson the pitcher." Though baseball's first Commissioner had been recruited by Major League Baseball to ferret out its worst in the midst of the 1919 Black Sox scandal, Landis was able to recognize the game's best as well, properly honoring this shimmering diamond in the Dead Ball Era rough. The presented M110 Sporting Life cabinet card could be similarly praised, rating among the most desirable rarities in the collecting hobby. The entire M110 promotion is an intimidating challenge for the modern hobbyist where the entire population of recorded examples, currently at a mere 39 submissions to account for all six subjects, making even the famed Honus Wagner card seem downright common by comparison. We actually see just how rare this series is as less than sixty (total) have passed through the SGC grading service.

Offered is not only one the rarest Mathewson collectibles but it is one of two cards to hold the title, "Highest SGC Graded Example!" The approx. 5-5/8" x 7" premium has been graded SGC 60 EX 5. There is some modest wear at the corners, very slight edge chips and some surface toning. The central image of the great mound master is totally unaffected. An impressive looking piece and a fantastic addition to any Mathewson collection.
