Description

1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Napoleon Lajoie SGC 60 EX 5 - Only One Higher. He was born to French Canadian parents who emigrated to the United States, named for the famous conqueror but often called "Larry," a nickname he picked up when a teammate struggled with the pronunciation of his surname. Like his contemporary Shoeless Joe Jackson, Lajoie was a grade school dropout who worked in a textile mill as a boy and quickly showed talent in industrial league play. As word of his slugging prowess spread, Lajoie rose through the semi-professional ranks to the Class B New England League Fall River Indians, and then almost immediately to the Majors for six years in Philadelphia with the Phillies and Athletics. But it was Lajoie's time in Cleveland for which he is best remembered, his popularity so great that the team was dubbed the "Naps" in his honor. Lajoie will certainly be most remembered for his card in the 1933 Goudey series but few can compare in rarity to this M110 Sporting Life cabinet card. While there are over eighty Goudey submissions, there are a mere six total examples recorded on the PSA census report. Graded SGC 60 EX 5, one of only three cards to grade EX with just one (a lone SGC 70) graded higher. There is one faint surface scratch and some modest wear to corners, no creases or wrinkles. The result is one of the finest examples of a card missing from most vintage collections.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
