1911-14 D304 Brunners Bread Honus Wagner SGC 60 EX 5. The hobby is blessed with a perennially tempting assortment of Honus Wagner mementos. A number of these are so firmly embedded in the lore of card collecting that their stories occasionally transcend both the specific cards and their superstar subject, and abundant tales of their acquisition and provenance have fueled innumerable lengthy conversations among enthusiasts. The regionally issued D304 collectibles carry plenty of mystique of their own, but those fragile bread inserts are woven more discreetly through the grand tapestry of hobbyist activity. The primary reason for this is bonafide rarity. Only distributed for a short time in a relatively lonely outpost, the Brunners cards never developed the feverish throngs of the sort that pursue T206 or the various E's. This lessened initial exposure, quite likely, projected into modern times as its own brand of exclusivity. It's not a stretch, metaphorically, to declare that if T206 attracts tourists who wants to "see the sights," D304 is the province of the understated locals who, much in-the-know, seek refinement and quiet satisfaction.

In terms of condition, the D304 Wagner offered here stands above the thirteen others recorded in SGC's census tallies. An immensely pleasing "1 of 1," the card presents itself with marvelous aplomb, beginning with a perfectly resolved image placed within well-calibrated white borders, and continuing with unimprovable print fidelity in every aspect. Very mild corner wear -- interpretable as the hallmark of always-respectful circulation -- is evenly distributed and inconspicuous. This is a thoroughly praiseworthy example of one of the hobby's "other" career-contemporary Wagner cards, and it's a pleasure to view.
