An ageless representation from The Tall Tactician

1910 E98 "Set of 30" Connie Mack "Black Swamp Find" SGC 96 Mint 9 - Pop Two, The Last Mint Example! The grand old man of baseball. Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy dedicated sixty-six years of his life to the game of baseball as a player, manager and owner. He is best known as simply "Connie Mack." After taking the helm of the A's in 1901, Mack would skipper the Philadelphia Athletics to two dynasties (1910-1914 and 1929-1931) resulting in five World Series titles. He holds the record for most appearances as manager with a remarkable 7,755 games with Philadelphia and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The closing year of his career came at the tender age of eighty-seven, recording nine pennants and eight championships on his resume. A quiet yet complex personality, Mack was described by a friend as, "tough and warm and wonderful, kind and stubborn and courtly and unreasonable and generous and calculating and naive and gentle and proud and humorous and demanding and unpredictable." He referred to his players by their first names and is known for helping retired players with jobs as a team scout, coach, or in the minor-league system. He is about as well respected as any man in baseball.

His status as manager/owner resulted in Mack appearing in a limited number of card promotions. Historically, his 1910 E98 "Set of 30" entry is among the more challenging cards of him to acquire, particularly in the higher grade levels. It is that which makes this card all the more remarkable. Even under magnification does one see the slightest hints of wear at two corner tips. The others are "Gem MT" quality. Centering is close to precise, surfaces and ink qualities are close to perfection. Graded SGC 96 Mint 9. One of only two to grade at this revered level based on the SGC census report. There are none higher. Even in our wildest imagination we cannot imagine a finer example from any card issue to featuring Mack could exist. Please note, this is the last E98 card of Mack graded "Mint" that is not in private hands!
