1910 Dockman & Son "All Star Base-Ball Package" Complete Box with Mathewson and Coombs! Exciting finds like this are so much more than collectible. They provide facts to long-unanswered hobby questions. For a century, a very small number of cards with simple cartoon drawings and backdrops were known, but nothing in regards to their origin. They were hand cut and most were cropped right above the player's head. A few had been discovered with the copy "All Star Base-Ball Package" intact, so at least we knew they were part of a box, more than likely associated with candy of some kind.

It wasn't until this amazing discovery came to light that we found out they are a product of John H. Dockman & Son of Baltimore. There must have been a blessed event after the All Star cards appeared, as these read, "John H. Dockman & Sons." Although they appear to be generic illustrations, the poses are from the T3 Turkey Red Cabinet cards, just simplified, inverted - and of other players.

The pose of Mathewson here is Vic Willis as a T3; Jack Coombs here is Harry Krause in the T3 series. This is the first box Heritage has ever offered and the only complete box we are aware of. There are one or two others known but we haven't confirmed they are complete. It is nothing short of astonishing that a complete box has somehow managed to avoid the ravenous hands of some child who was just dying to see what "Candy and Gift" rested inside.

For the Mathewson and Coombs followers, these are their rarest cards, in miraculous condition. Yes, there are a few very minor faults, the only one of note is a short fissure in the Coombs panel. Overall, the box presents at the EX/MT level, but, truth be told, condition is of no consequence when there are just two, maybe three surviving examples of its kind. If the hobby had an "endangered" list this would be on it. This entire series is very rare, with just one find of quantity when a 22-player near set was revealed.
