    Description

1910-11 M116 Sporting Life Complete Series No. 1 (12) - Newly Discovered and Intact Since 1910! In the age of electronic media and the Internet reading a book, an actual book made of paper and ink, is slowly becoming a pastime of generations past. A real page-turner has nothing on channel surfing. There are still vast libraries and collections out there and every now and then in addition to the priceless information or entertaining content can be a special surprise. Such is the case with this presentation of twelve baseball cards from 1910 found nestled in the pages of a dusty volume, forgotten about for over a century and kept intact ever since.

Sporting life conducted a comprehensive promotion featuring well over 200 players including newly forming stars and old veterans like Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner and Cy Young just to name a few. The hobby has designated them "M116." The set was distributed in 24 different series, each featuring a dozen players. Each player is presented in a formal portrait, the work of noted photographer Carl Horner. The first series contains no less than seven members of Baseball's Hall of Fame. As mentioned, this is a special "Series No. 1" find. Not just any examples, these cards were found with their original envelope inside an old book, kept together since 1910! Four players, including Ty Cobb, have earned "Pop One-of-One with None Higher!" status with SGC.

The envelope is brittle with wear and tear. Two pieces have come detached but it did its job protecting the cards very well. Each card has been graded by SGC. The dozen players include: Chief Bender (SGC 88 NM/MT 8, Pop Four, None Higher), Frank Chance (SGC 86 NM+ 7.5, Pop One, None Higher!), Hal Chase (SGC 88 NM/MT 8, Pop One, None Higher!), Ty Cobb (SGC 88 NM/MT 8, Pop One, None Higher!), Eddie Collins (SGC 60 EX 5), Harry Davis (SGC 60 EX 5), Red Dooin (SGC 80 EX/NM 6), Larry Doyle (SGC 84 NM 7), Hughie Jennings (SGC 60 EX 5), Christy Mathewson (SGC 88 NM/MT 8, Pop Two, One Higher), George McQuillan/Philadelphia (SGC 88 NM/MT 8, Pop One, None Higher!) and Honus Wagner (SGC 60 EX 5).
