Description

1910-11 M116 Sporting Life Christy Mathewson (Pastel Background) PSA Mint 9 - Pop. Three, None Higher.
The Dead Ball Era of our national pastime saw a sport that was populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands. In grand contradiction, Christy Mathewson was recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. As commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis famously eulogized the fallen baseball hero, "He was an inspiration to everybody, and may we have more of his kind." The 373-game winning right-hander appears here in his pitching prime, the three-season production span of the hobby's most popular tobacco issue finding Big Six averaging twenty-six victories and 158 strikeouts annually with an earned run average at a microscopic 1.70.

Graded PSA Mint 9. One of just three in Mint 9 with none rated higher. Here we find a representation that meekly raises its hand to be counted. The lack of colorful flash have given away to a formal and regal portrait composed of fine details and elegant tints, now logically referred to as the "Pastel Background" variant of his M116 Sporting Life card. Corners are sharp, surfaces are clean and boldly printed with no notable flaws. A condition rarity featuring one of baseball's legendary pitchers.
