Only three superior examples in PSA population report

1909-11 T206 Polar Bear Ray Demmitt St. Louis PSA EX-MT 6. While excellence on the diamond is the surest path to trading card significance, it is not the only itinerary. Consider the lowly Ray Demmitt, a .246 batter for the New York Highlanders traded after his 1909 rookie campaign to the Browns. After just ten games of St. Louis service in 1910, recording only four hits in twenty-three at bats, Demmitt was unceremoniously dismissed to an Eastern League assignment for three seasons in the minors. Demmitt would scrap his way back to the Bigs in 1914, but the T206 issue had already closed up shop in 1911.

So while those cards featuring Demmitt as a 1909 member of the team that would come to be known as the Yankees are rather commonly available, this St. Louis variation continues to bedevil collectors a century later. This is particularly true at the higher end of the condition spectrum, as the presented model is one of only two graded at an EX-MT 6 level, trailing only a pair of NM 7's and one NM-MT 8.

Colors remain bright with sharp left corners and light touches at right. Some minimal foxing must be reported on obverse and the highly-coveted "Polar Bear" back, the only format in which this Demmitt variation is found. Such modest condition concerns must be forgiven in light of the significant rarity--even Eddie Plank is easier to find in Near Mint or better condition.
