    Description

1909-11 T206 Piedmont Christy Mathewson, Dark Cap SGC 84 NM 7. Christy Mathewson was a man defined by so much more than baseball. "The Christian Gentleman" was an upstanding role model at a time when most ballplayers were thought to be hard-living, hard-drinking souls from the unpolished margins of society. One of the greats to ever grace the mound, Mathewson captured the NL's pitching Triple Crown in 1905 and again in 1908 - leading the circuit in wins, strikeouts and earned run average. Offered is a T206 of Mathewson "dark cap" pose, the least encountered of his three depictions. The illustration is bold and perfectly centered inside a frosty white frame. Graded SGC 84 NM 7 with a Piedmont brand reverse. One of a pair at the 84 NM level with two on record grading higher.
