    Description

1909-11 T206 Piedmont 350 Napoleon Lajoie (Portrait) PSA NM-MT 8 - None Higher. Napoleon Lajoie was born to French Canadians who emigrated to the United States. He was named for the famous conqueror but was often called "Larry," a nickname he picked up when a teammate struggled with the pronunciation of his surname. Like his contemporary Shoeless Joe Jackson, Lajoie was a grade school dropout who worked in textile mills as a boy and quickly showed talent in industrial league play. As word of his slugging prowess spread, Lajoie rose through the semi-professional ranks to the Class B New England League Fall River Indians, and then almost immediately to the Majors for six years in Philadelphia with the Phillies and Athletics. It was Lajoie's time in Cleveland for which he is best remembered. His popularity was so great that the team was dubbed the "Naps" in his honor. Though Lajoie managed briefly following his retirement as a player, he was out of the game completely by 1918. Offered is his T206 "Portrait" card. It is one of the finest with no others rated higher as verified on the PSA census. It goes without saying that high-grade examples are frustratingly scarce to say the least. His portrait is deep and haunting. It is hard to imagine others of equal quality are known. The back displays "Piedmont - 350 Subjects" advertising with a Factory 25 caption. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Counting all brands, this is one of twelve in NM-MT with none higher. Four are confirmed with a Piedmont back..
