Description

1909-11 T206 Old Mill Nap Lajoie, Throwing PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 - Pop One! Napoleon Lajoie was one of Cleveland's most beloved figures, so popular in his day that the ballclub was nicknamed the "Naps" in his honor. The team would take on its current "Indians" designation only upon his departure in 1915. The turn-of-the-century hero was renowned for being among the finest ballplayers both on and off the field. Lajoie's talents were at the top of the sport earning him elite status with others of his day such as Young, Mathewson, Johnson, Wagner and Cobb.

The "T206" edition exists with an extensive list of tobacco brands/ factory designations adorning the reverse side of each card. After a century has passed it seems as many hobbyists collect this benchmark edition with careful thought given to the name on the back as much as the name of the players on the obverse. The Old Mill name is among the tougher brands so it seems "Large Assortment" did not translate into "Large Quantity." This card has been graded PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 and would be considered a stunner even if it had been adorned with the most common reverse. This card shows barely any evidence of handling. The front surface is clean, the surrounding borders are bright; print registration is precise; the inks seem to have forgotten to show its age as they are vibrant and fresh. The boldly printed reverse is clean and problem free. It is entirely possible the only reason this card is not a mint 9 is the lone "speck" in the bottom border of the obverse and/or the reverse centering. He who hesitates will truly lose out on a rare opportunity to add a significant T206 combination to their collection.

The PSA population report shows that of the 260 "Unknown" census numbers only two exist at the Mint level and sixteen at the NM-MT 8 level. This is the only confirmed NM-MT+ 8.5 example to have an Old Mill or any other brand reverse! Considering the scarcity of the brand we can only speculate how unlikely it is that one of the pair of mint Lajoie "Throwing" versions would keep this unique collectible from the coveted "Pop 1-of-1 with none higher" title.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
