    Description

1909-11 E254 Colgan's Chips Ty Cobb PSA Mint 9 - The Highest Graded Example on Record! From 1909 to 1911, Colgan's Gum Co. of Louisville, Kentucky sponsored the massive E254 "Stars of the Diamond" edition, which included the greatest stars of the Dead Ball era. Following the theme of nearly every issue of the period, the incomparable Georgia Peach holds sway as the issue's key entry. At the time, Ty Cobb was at the apex of his considerable powers. His American League-leading numbers in 1911 are staggering: .420 average, 248 hits, forty-seven doubles, twenty-four triples, 127 RBIs, eighty-three stolen bases!

The Colgan's "cards" are actually wafer thin discs which had the distinction of being circulated in round metal packaging. For the Cobb specialist, this is one of the more obscure Georgia Peach offerings, and one rarely seen in very high grade. Obviously corner wear is not an issue, but because of the way they were sold, simply extricating the discs from their tin enclosures often resulted in chipping and dings to the fragile stock. Graded PSA Mint 9, this is the only example to grade "Mint" by PSA with none higher.
