The hobby's most famous trading card portrait

1908-09 PC760 Rose Co. Postcards Honus Wagner SGC 20 Fair 1.5.
The Rose Company of Philadelphia was the producer of a number of promotions but it is their baseball series from 1908-09 that ranks among the most desirable and graphically appealing of all postcard issues. The set was comprised of a dozen players from each Major League team, and a dozen more from the Scranton (PA) Miners of the New York State League, presumably an exception made due to the team's proximity to Philadelphia.

The format is a classic motif of baseball iconography executed in green, black and a rich gold metallic ink, a regal treatment not unlike the T204 Ramly issue of the day. Embossing provides a third dimension, further evidence of the considerable expense of original production. Here we offer a key subject in the set, or in any set issued during the first decade of the twentieth century. The image of the first shortstop in the Baseball Hall of Fame will be instantly recognizable to even the most casual of trading card collectors, the portrait photograph by renowned lensman Carl Horner that saw contemporary and very limited release in the immortal T206 issue.

Graded SGC 20 Fair 1.5. Remarkably, this postcard makes the hobby's most coveted cardboard seem downright common by comparison, as the combined census reports of PSA and SGC total just eleven Wagner representations of the Rose postcard. A piece of tape and paper from once being mounted into a scrapbook almost single-handedly accounts for the SGC rating. The rather flimsy card stock utilized in this set's creation usually means unsightly creases, but that fault appears only very modestly in corners.
