    Description

1907 Seamless Steel Tubes Co. Ty Cobb Rookie SGC 30 Good 2 - One of Three Known. Such was the promise of the young man named Cobb from Royston, GA that even at the tender age of 21 he was already a subject for promotion and being dubbed "...the greatest ball player of the year in America." The 1907 Detroit Tigers were a powerhouse club generating a 92-58 W-L record and would take the American League pennant. For Cobb, it would be his first of many 200+ hit seasons and an eye popping .350 batting average. That success brought attention and opportunities for promotion. Post cards were mail in abundance with baseball players becoming a popular theme. Today, none would claim these issues are readily available but many are well documented. This Detroit Seamless Steel Tubes Co. is after a century of time only the third copy confirmed to exist. Being based out of Detroit, one can only wonder if Seamless Steel included other stars like Sam Crawford or Hughie Jennings or was Cobb the lone star of this show.
Graded SGC 30 Good 2, this is the highest graded of the pair. Thankfully the card is free of hand written addresses, messages and postal cancellations as it was never used as mail correspondence. Corner quality is what one sees on your typical "VG/EX" card. There is a pair of light corner creases but the main catalyst for the SGC grade is the surface toning. Once on display and partially covered by matting, the surface of the central area has a darker sheen due to being exposed for years to light. The pale portions are not to be taken for wear. There is no surface loss or any roughness in those areas. This is by far one of the rarer early Cobb collectibles. The full figure portrait of Cobb in his dirty uniform, bat and glove in hand, and that steely (no pun intended) glare of pure determination and/or disgust that would be his calling card for decades are unique to this piece.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
