    Description

1906 Lincoln Publishing Philadelphia Athletics SGC-Graded Near Set (18/20). As new finds of collectibles are brought to auction, other civilians (non-hobbyists) take to their basements and attics in the hopes of discovering treasure. This was the case of this consignor. In his possession were these completely unused and very rare Lincoln Publishing post cards which showcase the American League Champion Philadelphia Athletics. Thankfully none saw use as correspondence. The Philadelphia Athletics debuted in 1901 as part of the newly formed American League. The A's won their first pennant in 1905 with a pitching staff of three 18- or-more game winners in Hall of Famers Chief Bender (18-11 W-L), Rube Waddell (27-10 W-L) and Eddie Plank (24-12 W-L). Surprisingly, there was not a single .300 batter in the line up but a solid list of consistent .260+ hitters and the skills of manager Connie Mack.

Currently, SGC has graded a total of 39 cards from this series. Every entry noted on the SGC census from grade levels "30" through "80" are in this presentation. One can only imagine when or even if another comparable collection in quantity and quality will ever be discovered. Missing Coakly (SGC has yet to grade one) and Henley for completion. Includes: SGC 80 EX/NM 6: 2 cards, Chief Bender and Daniel Hoffman; SGC 70 EX+ 5.5: 2 cards, Joseph Meyers and Connie Mack; SGC 60 EX 5: 7 cards, Lafayette Cross, Harry Davis, James Dygert, Fred Hartsel, Dan Murphy, Rube Oldring and Maurice Powers; SGC 55 VG/EX+ 4.5: 2 cards, Eddie Plank and Ralph Seybold; SGC 45 VG/EX+ 4.5: 1 card, Briscoe Lord; SGC 40 VG 3: 2 cards, M. Cross and John Knight; SGC 30 GD 2: 1 card, Rube Waddell; SGC 20 FR 1.5: 1 card, Ossie Schreckengost.
