    Description

1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug Cap Anson SGC 70 EX+ 5.5. The 40-card Mayo Cut Plug edition (48 with variations) appeared when there were few other tobacco insert sets being produced and is the premier baseball card promotion of the 1890's. The deep and saturated black borders, dual-tone and finely detailed portraits combine for a luxurious presentation making N300s one of the most sought after cards of the 19th Century with a sports theme. Among the roster of subjects are some of the greatest talents of the era but certainly none are more sought after than Chicago 1st Baseman Adrian "Cap" Anson. Not just one of baseball's first superstars, Anson would become the founding member of the 3,000 Hits club, a selective fraternity which set the standard for future excellence. Graded SGC 70 EX+ 5.5. This is the only card at the EX+ level with a handful rated higher. The offered example is bright and clean and presents magnificently. There are just minor condition issues including slight edge roughness, less than precise vertical centering and some very slight residue, almost unseen on the dark black surface. The "worst" we find is the minor spot infraction affecting the right edge just above shoulder level. All four corners come to a point. Physically and visually, this is an impressive card that appears to have been handled only minimally over the last 120 years.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
