1888 N338-2 S.F. Hess Bill "California" Brown SGC 55 VG/EX+ 4.5 - One of Three SGC & PSA Examples! Another great rarity of 19th Century baseball tobacco cards are the S.F. Hess promotions. The N388-2 series features baseball players mostly from the Giants and Mets plus a few St. Louis and Detroit subjects. The census reports for both PSA and SGC show a combined 35 total N338-2 submissions to date. Bill Brown played for seven seasons starting in 1887 for six different teams. He was a lifetime .261 batter who served as an infielder, outfielder and catcher. Brown had a lung condition that led to his passing at just 31 years old in 1897. Graded SGC 55 VG/EX+ 4.5. The card has a nice image with modest corner wear. The blank reverse shows some surface wear and staining. This means nothing as there are currently less than a handful of recorded examples and this is the first time one has been made available at auction. This is one of only three cards recorded on both SGC and PSA population reports!
