    Description

1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Mike Kelly Baseball PSA NM-MT 8. Mike "King" Kelly lived life large. He was the first celebrity ball player. He was not only a player, but a manager, an author of a book, a performer on Vaudeville, one of the key founders of the Players' league, and a bon vivant who lived life hard, and let his partying and drinking become a recurring problem. He played MLB for 16 years, mostly for the Chicago White Stockings and the Boston Beaneaters. He debuted with the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1883, and when they folded, went to the White Stockings in 1885. He led the National League in batting by hitting .354 in 1884 and .388 in 1886. He helped Chicago to five pennants, but Kelly's wild ways caused a rift with owner Albert Spalding, and Kelly was dealt to the Boston Beaneaters for $10,000 and thus received another nickname, "The $10,000 Beauty,". Kelly, of Irish descent, became an instant favorite of the many Irish fans, but his daring play, ebullient attitude and flair captivated fans of all backgrounds, and he even appeared in Vaudeville, reciting "Casey At the Bat", with his handsome appearance helping to make him a matinee idol on-and-off the field. Kelly actually handled much of the publicity for the new Players' League, and played in the league for Boston. After batting .307 lifetime, he retired in 1893 and was selected to the Hall of Fame in 1945.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. The vivid colorful hand art on the 1887 Allen & Ginter World's Champions cards remains an enduring value for the set of 50 cards, which included multi-sports stars, even "Miss" Annie Oakley and Wild Bill Cody as sharpshooters. This 1887 Allen & Ginter King Kelly card is one of eight in NM-MT with two higher.
