    Description

1888 Joseph Hall Kansas City Ball Club Team Cabinet. The name Joseph Hall is all too familiar with 19th Century specialists. The baseball images produced by this Brooklyn-based studio in the late 1880s are so much more than just moments captured in time. The comprehensive library of work serve as a record of baseball history. Most will easily call them the most desirable of all 19th Century issues. His works are not just one time projects. In 1888, Joseph Hall created what is a truly the first "set" of team cards in the truest sense. His promotion, "Photographs of the American Association B. B. Clubs. 1888" tells us this was a comprehensive effort presenting all 14 American Association teams could be bought or "collected" for the first time.

Offered is the 1888 Kansas City Cowboys Base Ball Club. The team ended the 1888 season batting .218 with an 8th place, 43-89 W-L record. All things considered, having each of the players identified on the mount might not have been the best option. The Cowboys were part of the American Association for only two years - 1888 and 1889. Any artifact of this defunct squad is a treasured memento of baseball history. Measuring 4-1/4" x 6-1/2", the warm grey card mount shows some light corner wear and three edge abrasion into the top edge, one mildly affects the photo. The deep black reverse elegantly displays in gold metallic the Joseph Hall name and decoration. The surface does have edge dings and a pair of surface scratches. But it is the 12-man portrait that really makes this item significant. The picture is affected only very mildly but it is the tremendous picture quality that makes one wonder how after 129 years it could still present so nicely. The contrast and fine clarity is as precise as one would expect from a premier studio. We are aware of only two examples and can't imagine more than a handful surviving the last 129 years.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
