1888/89 N173 Dogs Head & Old Judge Cabinet Roger Connor, Batting SGC 10 Poor 1! A recently discovered piece and only the second known example of this singularly unique cabinet card celebrating the reigning Home Run King and Baseball Hall of Famer Roger Connor. Though his 138 career home runs may not impress the modern Sabermetrician, Connor's Dead Ball Era power was unrivaled, his record standing for decades before it was toppled by a youngster named Ruth. This card is significant for numerous reasons. Connor is a highly regarded Hall of Famer from the 19th Century. Overall N173s are rare, and Connor's entry is among the most desired. This full-figure portrait of Connor batting is one of a few batting images known from the era, and appears to be exclusive to the N173 cabinet edition as, to date, it has not been encountered as an N172 insert card. This fact is somewhat surprising as this image was used for an 1888 scorecard which advertises Old Judge Cigarettes. This is the second known example ever encountered to feature the "Dogs Head & Old Judge" gilded gold advertising. Graded SGC 10 Poor 1. The Portrait shows good detail and a nice range of values. It is affected by staining, and the lighter toned perimeter comes as the result of past matting and display. The technical grade is a reflection of the paper strips adhered to the reverse. The reverse also shows pencil notations of "CWP" and "50 cents" plus light soiling. The front has a couple physical detriments, the worst being a small surface chip near the bottom right corner, and obvious staining. There are no creases or wrinkles. A few faults maybe, but it has taken 125 years for this card to make its debut. It is truly a close to one-of-a-kind gem and we can certainly say that the 50-cent purchase should prove to be a wise investment.
