    Description

1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats Harry Wright SGC 60 EX 5 - The Highest Graded Example. Wright's contributions to the early development of our national pastime place him right alongside Cartwright and Doubleday as one of baseball's most noteworthy pioneers. He was the founder and center fielder of the first professional ball club, the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, he invented the box scoring system, designed the standard baseball uniform and was the first to direct his defense to shift in relation to hitters' tendencies. Overstatement is nearly impossible when contextualizing the significance of Wright within baseball history at large.

N690 Kalamazoo Bats are among the rarest baseball cards and a full checklist probably may never be known. They are also near the top of the desirability list as every vintage collector dreams of laying claim to at least one example. Tobacco users could redeem for prizes a min. of 15 cards and up to 400 cards for various prizes. This certainly explains their rarity a century later. In fact, only ten Harry Wright examples appear within the joint population reports of PSA (4 cards) and SGC (6 cards).

The offered example loudly asserts its supremacy within this microscopic population, the nearest competition a full two grade levels below the SGC 60 EX 5 assessment. Our catalog imagery should convey just how remarkably well-preserved this extraordinary entry is, particularly when considering that the overwhelming majority of the issue is found in the lower half of the grading spectrum. The corners and edges of these "real photo" promotions are highly susceptible to chipping and wrinkling it seems endemic to the N690 breed. A trend that this offering bucks beautifully. One of the most exciting opportunities we've presented for the 19th century collector.
