1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats Ed Cushman SGC 50 VG/EX 4 - A New Discovery. This is the first time this card has ever been offered at public auction. The career of Edgar Leander Cushman lasted a span of seven years (1883-1890). Representing no less than five different teams during his playing days, Cushman compiled a 60-82 record and a lifetime 3.86 ERA. His greatest achievement came late in 1884 with Milwaukee. While appearing in only four games, Ed won all four games! In back-to-back starts fans saw a no-hitter and then eight scoreless innings, an almost impossible feat in baseball. The discovery of this Kalamazoo Bat earns Cushman the attention in the hobby world he doesn't enjoy for his on the field exploits. He is listed in reference guides but to date this is the first recorded entry based on both PSA and SGC census reports. We have found no instance where an example has been sold publicly. The in-uniform portrait is the same image used for the very rare N172 "Spotted Tie" sub-set featuring members of the New York Metropolitans. Graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4, the card has very light edge/corner wear with minor spot staining that only mildly affects an image that is crisp with fine details. Some surface roughness appears on the blank reverse. How often can one acquire the first available example of a close to 125-year old collectible? It is entirely possible only a few other copies may have survived.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
