    Description

    Population one, two finer!

1887 N28 Allen & Ginter Cap Anson PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. He's been called the first star of our national pastime, a distinction quite clearly earned by a man who founded the 3,000 Hit Club, a decade after the presented relic was produced. This marvelous image finds him at the height of his unparalleled 19th century greatness, as his .347 batting average would earn him his third of four career National League batting championships. His striped cap, handlebar mustache and thick-handled bat evoke the 19th century game perfectly.

With gorgeous Victorian-era lithography and portraiture featuring an intriguing assortment of early sporting legends, the N28 Allen & Ginter "The World's Champions" set is considered one of the true masterpieces of the early trading card hobby. Six future Baseball Hall of Famers appear among the fifty entries comprising the issue, with Anson second only to Charles Comiskey in in a key card ranking.

This particular representation finds itself in similarly rarefied air, the only Anson housed in a NM-MT+ 8.5 slab, bested only twice in 190 attempts to date. Thirteen decades of existence has barely laid a glove on this exquisite beauty, which still bears the same sharp corners and clean surfaces of its birth during the Grover Cleveland administration. An extraordinary memento from the infancy of the professional game.
