    Description

1887 N28 Allen & Ginter Cap Anson PSA NM-MT 8. Adrian Cap Anson was a rookie with the 1871 Rockford Forest Citys who would prove to be baseball's first great star and the founder of the 3,000 Hit Club. He was without a doubt one of baseball's first superstars. It was that selective fraternity that set the bar for future excellence. His status was a double edge sword as it afforded him with the influence to establish racial discrimination that stains our National pastime for over half a century. Perhaps a victim of karma, post-retirement saw Anson become Chicago's city clerk for one term then a failed primary attempt to become sheriff in 1907. Failed business included his own brand of beer, "Anson's Colts" (a semi-pro team in the Chicago City League) and a semi-pro football team of the same name. His handlebar mustache and steely look of determination helps captivate the viewer as one gazes upon this quintessential Victorian era issue.

It is no wonder the N28 edition is arguably the most popular of the 19th Century tobacco insert sets. The ten baseball subjects are the cornerstones to many 19th Century card collections. Anson is the key. The card offers a frosty white backdrop surrounds Caps' boldly printed portrait. Sharp corners and an overall absence of noteworthy wear combine for a well-deserved PSA NM-MT 8 rating. One of ten graded NM-MT with three rated higher. Regardless of the grade, it is a great example of the set's most desirable and valuable subject.
